Niek de Groot - English short

Dutch musician Niek de Groot is one of today's leading classical double-bassists. Since completing a 10 year tenure as first solo-bass with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2006, he has dedicated himself to chamber music and solo performances. From 1996 he is Senior Professor at the Folkwang University for the Arts in Essen, Germany.

Niek developed his skills at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and learned with cellists Frans
Helmerson and Lluìs Claret. He made solo-recordings for EMI, BIS and Nimbus. Upcoming projects include releases and recordings for BMC, Kairos, Orlando Records and BIS of Kurtág’s new version of the ‘Sudelbücher’, a CD with French solorepertoire, Gubaidulina’s ‘Galgenlieder’ and the world-premiere of Fagerlund’s new doublebass-concerto. During his career he had the privilege to play on instruments by Cerutti, Bajoni, Candi, Amati, Montagnana and Degen. His bows are by Jochen Schmidt.
